Villains I Love to Hate

Uncategorized

Sometimes it feels good to love the bad. Here are some of my favorite villains!

I’m in a rut. There! I admitted it. I have been writing terrible, horrible, no good, very bad, TWO-DIMENSIONAL villains.

Personally, I’m gonna blame my kids for this one. After all, that’s why I had them, right? Just kidding. We have been watching a lot of classic Disney lately and I have found these movies to be riddled with other 2D villains.

Gaston from Beauty and the Beast? Vain, cocky, wants the girl. All you need to know. Clayton from Tarzan? He Tarzan, She Jane, Clayton want gorillas. Ursula from The Little Mermaid? While I like her more, her motivations still aren’t the strongest.

So how the heck do I get out of this rut? Because I’m in desperate need of a little inspiration, I figured I’d look to my favorite fictional villains for the answers. Here’s the quick and dirty list. Who knows? Maybe you’ll get inspired, too.

Fletcher from Whiplash. It’s a tough call, but this might be my favorite movie of all time. Fletcher is a music conductor with a sadistic streak who pushes a young drummer, Andrew, to his limits and beyond. I love him because he’s so unexpected, he has such clear passions, and his most redeeming quality is that he pushes musicians to be their best (even if this doesn’t always turn out well).

Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones. Loved him in the books, loved him in the HBO series. Tywin Lannister is the hardened, cruel patriarch of the Lannister family. He’s the ultimate in characters you love-to-hate because he does the absolute worst things while trying to do right by his family.

Joker from The Dark Knight. All iterations of the Joker are acceptable, but special credit has to be given to Heath Ledger for really giving this character new life. His take on the Joker was dark but humorous, sadistic but logical. He was full of contradictions and kept us on our toes.

Alright guys, I know it’s a quick list but hopefully this was as fun for you to read as it was for me to write. Personally, I love the bad guys and have a soft spot for a well-rounded villain. Hopefully my own antagonists get better with time. As you wait for my next post, be sure to check out some of my other content. I recently wrote two other fun lists about my favorite romance movies and TV shows.
